The Meaning of Earth Day: Beyond Short Term Survival

Through the years, I have thought often about why we humans do so many damaging and destructive things. Why don’t we take care of our health, be kind to others, and respect our environment? That all sounds simple enough.

We don’t do these things because we have competing sets of survival instincts. These account for opposing worldviews and the epic struggle that goes on daily for the evolution and survival of humanity. Curiously, both these instincts are the products of evolution. Now, the true meaning of Earth Day comes home: it’s time to move beyond these survival instincts which are destroying our Earth.
